Operation Backpack

Can you see it???   Can you smell it???

It’s that brand new box of crayons. Remember how that made you feel as a kid??? That was always one of the most exciting things about going back to school. That bright orange and green box; all of those pointed, unused, shiny crayons. You got to be the first one to use each and every one of those new crayons.

It is the goal of St. Philip EYC to see that every child that attends the Emmanuel Episcopal Center has that same feeling on the first day of school. You know, it is hard enough to keep at risk children and teens in school; let’s not make it more difficult for them...let’s make it easier by providing them with the tools necessary to achieve their dreams.

It takes many hours of planning many hours of time donated, many dollars donated, many shopping carts to purchase the supplies, and a friendly helpful voice out of Los Angeles (thank you Andy) to be able to get the supplies in on-time, as requested.

Over the years, this small little project developed by Joe Sims at St. Philip (Joe is now at Annunciation) has grown from picking up supplies with his car (50 backpacks), to using my Father’s truck, to this year, delivery by an 18-wheeler + many shoppers + a truck and 2 men provided by parishioner, Ferd Heckle. .

With the help of many volunteers, we completed more than 300 backpacks and as
you can see on the tables, we had over 10,000 individual supplies including scientific calculators for all middle and high school students.

Through the efforts of Operation BackPack and the help Emmanuel Episcopal Center gives these students, many of them are realizing their dreams; dreams for the future with a college education or vocational education to boot.

Each BackPack, loaded with all of the grade appropriate supplies costs approximately $35.00. If you would like to help, please make your check payable to St. Philip Episcopal Church and on the memo line, please put “Operation BackPack”.  Donations may be made at any time throughout the year.

This is one way each and every one of us in the Diocese of West Tennessee can help to “make a child’s dreams come true”
